Community Based Initiative to Protect Birds from Deadly Nets
Across Bangladesh, countless fish-eating birds of diverse species are tragically ensnared and perished in nets strewn across ponds and wetlands by local commercial fish farmers. Nets are to protect their ponds from bird attacks, inadvertently turning them into lethal traps for various bird species, especially those that prey on fish. Despite the farmers’ assertion of necessity, we contend that these nets ultimately convert ponds into bird graveyards, disrupting ecological balance. Shockingly, one fish farmer can inadvertently cause the deaths of 5-7 birds monthly, escalating to 500-700 birds per 100 farmers.
Our initiative with our local partners strives to safeguard these birds through rescue missions, community mobilization, and awareness campaigns among fish farmers. We establish volunteer groups within communities and set up a bird and wildlife care center to ensure their protection and rehabilitation.
Your support enables us to educate farmers and community members about the significance of bird conservation. Volunteer groups will leave a lasting impact on local conservation efforts, managing the bird care center autonomously. Through this project, we are motivating institutions to engage more actively in bird conservation. These initiatives play a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity.
