A Child with Big Dreams in Rural Bangladesh
Seven-year-old Ratul Islam lives in a small village in Netrokona District, Bangladesh. Every morning, he puts on his school uniform, picks up his books, and walks to school with excitement. Ratul is currently a playgroup student, full of curiosity and big dreams.
When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Ratul answers without hesitation:
“I want to become a doctor.“
He dreams of helping sick people in his community and supporting his family, who work hard to provide him with an education.
Ratul’s father is a day laborer. His work is physically demanding, and income is often uncertain. Some days there is work; other days there is none. Ratul’s mother is a homemaker who takes care of the family and encourages her son to study hard so he can build a brighter future.
Challenges of Clean Drinking Water in Schools
Like many children in rural Bangladesh, Ratul faces challenges that children elsewhere may never have to think about. One of those challenges is access to safe drinking water at school.
During the hot summer months, the school’s limited water supply can make it difficult for students to stay hydrated throughout the day. For young children like Ratul, the heat can be exhausting. When students are thirsty, it becomes harder to focus, learn, and enjoy school.
A simple glass of clean water can make a tremendous difference.
Thanks to the generosity of Green Fund Initiative’s donors and supporters, that difference is now becoming a reality.
Green Fund Initiative’s Water Project
Green Fund Initiative is installing a 1,000-liter elevated water storage tank at Ratul’s school. The new system will provide a reliable source of safe drinking water for more than 500 students and school staff members.
For Ratul, this means he will have easier access to clean water whenever he needs it during the school day. It means fewer worries about thirst and more energy to learn, play, and pursue his dream of becoming a doctor.
Impact on Students and Education
While the project may seem small, its impact is profound. Access to clean drinking water helps children stay healthy, improves concentration in the classroom, and creates a better learning environment for everyone.
For Ratul and hundreds of other students, this project is more than a water tank. It is an investment in their future.
One day, Ratul hopes to wear a white doctor’s coat and care for patients in his community. That journey begins with education, and education begins with ensuring that children have the basic necessities they need to learn and thrive.
