Women’s Empowerment Program

Environmental and social-related issues drive conflict and challenge across the world. These issues have a disproportionately negative impact on women and girls, amplifying existing gender disparities and posing special risks to their livelihoods, health, and safety. Women and girls are more likely to be injured due to long-standing gender inequalities that have created disparities in information, mobility, decision-making, and access to resources and training. In the aftermath, women and girls are less able to access relief and assistance, further threatening their livelihoods, wellbeing, and recovery, and creating a vicious cycle of vulnerability to future disasters and their economies. Their health is endangered by limiting access to services and health care, as well as increasing risks related to maternal and child health.

GFI emphasizes creating alternative sustainable livelihood opportunities for their socio-economic empowerment. Under this program, GFI selects disaster-vulnerable women in consultation with our partner community-based organization in the project area; assessing knowledge and awareness of the women on disaster preparedness and non-stereo typing and empowering livelihood options;  mapping and identifying existing non-traditional, non-stereotype livelihood options practice; analyzing opportunities for women and developing skills which will contribute in their resilience building; conduct disaster preparedness and livelihood skills training in consultation with relevant stakeholders; conduct pre and post-training capacity assessment;  organize training and re-trainings for them; facilitate providing cash grants through bank transfer; periodical progress tracking of the beneficiaries in terms of knowledge and understanding on disaster preparedness; and building assets; and conduct post-training monitoring and collect data on their progress.
